In a 2010 interview…the anti-apartheid firebrand and “Mother of the Nation” Winnie Madikizela-Mandela accused her former husband of selling out after being broken by his 27 years in apartheid prisons.
"Mandela did go to prison and he went in there as a burning young revolutionary. But look what came out," she was quoted as saying.
"Mandela let us down. He agreed to a bad deal for the blacks. Economically, we are still on the outside. The economy is very much ‘white’. It has a few token blacks, but so many who gave their life in the struggle have died unrewarded.”
o0o0ooo0h shit…thoughts? is Mandela really the person we make him out to be?
The impression I got from Black students in South Africa was that Mandela was a name and face of a struggle and of a new democracy.. an inspiration, yes, but he did not have as much power as it appeared (hell for 27 years of the struggle, he was imprisoned). Corruption grew in the ANC.
The economic issues that linger in SA… I don’t think of it as a Mandela issue. Something happened in South Africa that has rarely happened in world history. The oppressed granted the oppressor amnesty. Once colonization has done its best to destroy a people (think about it.. greedy greed monsters found diamonds and gold there. so you already know the recent history is violent), what can we do to make sure the entire system of oppression is destroyed.
